It was an early start on Thursday morning….4am to be
precise. Emma's mozzie net decided to fall down in the middle of the night so operation
"fix the mozzie net and get another 40 winks before the alarm goes off", was
completed very successfully and efficiently.

After breakfast, we were poked and prodded in to our saris and
by 10.30am that morning, we were tucking in to a nice big plate full of prawn
fried rice with chill noodles (as you do). This was prepared by the local woman
who attend free weekly cooking classes here. Then after lunch, some of the sponsored
widows arrived to get their monthly food parcel. In the afternoon, we taught a
younger afterschoolers class about different fruits.

On Friday, the pre-schoolers were learning to write some
Sinhala letters, so we took the opportunity to learn to write our names in
Sinhala, so our homework over the weekend is to perfect that! The older afterschoolers finished their exams,
so as a “treat” we took them for games in the afternoon.  We played the Greenisland Presby classic games
such as Head/Catch, Flinch, “Running Pictionary but  with play doh instead of drawing” (yes it does
need a new catchy name), squeeze, balloon team games….and of course it wouldn’t
be complete without an “England v Sri Lanka” cricket match, which we obviously won
against one of the biggest cricketing nations! It was really good fun with lots
of energy and “Boys v Girls” competitive spirit.

To celebrate the end of our first week, we headed out for milkshakes
by the sea, watching a rainbow fade into the sunset as the sun went down. We were
entertained greatly by the waiter who was full of compliments by comparing us
to animals…one of us is a giraffe, another an elephant and lastly a monkey. I’ll
leave you to decide who is who…..again, not insults but compliments – this is
why I live Sri Lanka!

They say you learn a lot about people you live or travel
with, well there is one thing we have learnt for sure…we are 3 quite competitive
people. Last night’s game of “snap” went to a whole new level (I’m surprised no
fingers were lost).  If we were to keep a
leader board, Hannah is the champion of snap, Emma the queen of Jenga and I’m
the master of “Jack change it”. This weekend, the table tennis bats are coming
out which could be interesting…I may need to clear the area of anything
