Entry 59 of 109 | show all | print this entry

Yesterday afternoon a snake visited the school. One of the kids spotted it so everything was quickly cleared out and the good old stick with oil on it was brought out to scare it away. However after a lot of bashing about and poking around in corners, no snake was found. So it's still roaming free in it's natural environment.

Today, after being in a cricket obsessed country for 12weeks, I finally got me hands on a cricket bat when a few of the older ones were playing this afternoon. I was impressed with the fact that I could hit the ball. The boys who were bowling were probably taught how to throw a ball before they could walk, so they were coming at me at high speed! Don't think they saw any potential in me though.

Today was the last proper school day before the 2week holiday. Tomorrow morning is the Sports Day for Preschool and then Friday afternoon is the afterschoolers. They'll be full of games and singing with me in a Sari and Mark in a sarong. Looking forward to it. A lot if time and preparation has gone into it from the teachers and the children have been practicing all week, so it should all pay off. It's at a nearby playing area because there's no room here with all the building work.

Tonight we went to the beach for a perfectly innocent walk. It ended up being more eventful than we thought. First of all I fell flat on my face in the sea while running out from a wave. This caused much delight to everyone plus all the other people who were there.  Then Mark and the driver (Ronali's here) decided to start rugby tackling each other in the sea. All this on the night that the water tank in empty, which will fill overnight, so we have 1 shower between 5 of us! On the plus side, we were at the beach to see Sri Lanka's amazing sunset.

And as I type, Mr Gordon is flying back to England. He shall return as he's left his beloved hat!! It's almost definite he'll be back for the opening of the new classrooms in the next month or so. Just a word on the building front, they started painting the outside of it today. From my non-building background, my untechincal opinion is that I think the main building structure is complete and it just needs all the finishing touches like plastering. As I said, that's just what I see, doesn't necessarily mean that's what's happening!
