Yesterday saw another death defying jeep ride - 10mins of clinging for dear life (ok I'm exaggerating a little!). This time it was to a temple on top of a mountain, on the way to Kataragama. The scenery was amazing - you felt that if you reached up you could touch the sky as it was so high up. We were there during one of their rituals - I have never heard bells ring so loudly! It was then off to Kataragama for a second look at the procession, although it was from a different vantage point and everything was much closer. It's very sad to see all these people clinging to the hope that they can bargain and negotiate with their gods (apparently they have 33million god!!) by offering them fruit baskets. Another Buddhist ritual is that they make a request of their god and then throw a coconut onto the ground. Depending on how the coconut breaks will tell them how they are going to be "answered".
I think today I had the most fun I have had at Preschool so far! We had the kids marching round playing percussions instruments - totally inspired by Kataragama!  For their first time, they were very good at keeping in time and marching along to the beat and they had such concentration on their faces. I played the tambourine - it was brilliant! I could have done it all morning but we stopped when the children starting to say their hands were getting sore! There was also a birthday today, so the parents had sent in a cake and bananas which always go down a treat and exactly what you need after a morning of marching!
The afterschoolers were still few and far between today - I had 8 in total. They did a wordsearch which took up a lot of the time and then played a memory game - the first person named an animal, then the next had to say the animal the previous mentioned and add one of their own and so on. So the poor person at the end had to remember 8 animals.
