Today the afterschoolers had their first ever RE lesson. Out of about the 40/45 children that attend, only around 12 were in the class as the other children come from mainly Buddhist backgrounds. In Sri Lanka, the only religion taught in schools is Buddhism. So this really is a breakthrough, especially as it could be the only Christian teaching the children are getting, apart from if they go to Sunday School. It was a humbling experience to see them all sitting with their Bibles and listening attentively to Nayli. Every so often I heard names mentioned in the middle of fluent Sinhala! Also at the start if the class they said a prayer (which I was asked to lead), again which is a good practice. I said I would use some classes to teach them songs but I want them to be translated so they know what they are singing. The teachers will be able to do that.
