Mainz is a city located close to Frankfurt with some 200 000 inhabitants. The historical city centre was destroyed up to 80% during the air bombings in the second world war, but is quite nicely restored.
A rainy day in Mainz. Bärbel went to Mainz on business and we went along. We wanted to see the Mainz Cathedral before going back home. It is over 1 000 years old and built in romanesque style. Well, because it was raining, we didn't feel like exploring the city more that that. We ate some delicious German food at a restaurant close to the cathedral. I managed to eat two steaks! Probably the first time in my life for that as well. We went home using a "Mitfahrgelegenheit", shared lift which you can book online under www.mitfahrgelegenheit.de or www.mitfahrzentrale.de. A great idea to share the costs and preserve nature. Our journey didn't start that well, though. The young girl driving the car caused a minor accident (with really no damage that I could see) when pulling out of the parking space (though she had parked where you shouldn't really park). Anyway, an older woman came like a rocket out of her car, shouting, and made her sign a paper stating that she had cost it all. And really, I could see no damage. But Germans really love their cars... Thank God I never drive a car in Germany. ...yes, we have no car either. And will probably never have.
