checked into our guest house and they were super nice and gave us our
room early! YIPEE that meant that we got to have a nap!
We then got to do some exploring around what is known as "India's most romantic city".
It really is beautifully set on the banks of Lake Pichola. In the middle of the lake is the famous "Lake Palaces". Formerly summer residences of the Maharaja's they are now Udaipur’s
landmarks. One has since been turned into a luxury hotel, complete with mango trees and state of the art pools. Needless to say, we did not stay there
Really in Udaipur we did a lot of relaxing, we roamed the streets, did a bit of shopping and even caught a cooking class from a local. The class was great. It was just the two of us and we learned how to make some great vegetarian dishes and some Indian staples like Chai Masala, Chapati and Parantha. Our teacher was very engaging and spent a lot of time correcting the way we were turning the breads in the pan. After the class we also had a great feast of all the dishes we made. I am hoping that I can make them just as successfully when I get home. Seth, we may have to have an Indian dish cook off =)
The one site that we did visit in Udaipur was the City Palace; the largest palace in Rajasthan. We learnt a lot of history of the area. It was founded by Udai Singh. He founded the city at its current location because of a prophet that he met in the hills. The prophet decreed that if he built his town there, that the Merwar dynasty would rule for an eternity
Udai Singh was most well known for the horse that he rode, Chetak. The Merwar rulers did not ride elephants like the other Maharaja's but rather horses that wore elephant trunks. At first we thought this was really strange but we learned that this is because horses were faster in battle and when they came into contact with an elephant, the fake trunk would make the elephant think it was a baby elephant and it would not attack. Rather ingenious really.
