Rest and Repairs in Samara

Our rest-day has seen most of us out in the sun today, either working in the
car-park or at a nearby workshop, where over a dozen cars were seeking attention
this morning. The red Porsche 356, having had spare parts flown in, saw a
morning of work at the back of a dark and greasy old shed finishing off the
rebuild of its engine, and soon after lunchtime was again purring away, and
driving through the streets back to the hotel, fit to go for the rest of the
event…. Phil Cuerel looking very happy.
Looking more glum was Lars Rolner, driver of car 8, the big Bentley which had
been third-overall in the early days of the event, and even more glum was
Annette, who broke down in tears when it was realised that the axle problems
were so severe the car now needs to be trucked to Kiev, where we have our final
rest-day before the final haul to the finish in Paris. The Bentley requires the
differential to be rebuilt. “You have your ups and downs, it’s important to be
philosophical about all this, we have done well… but now have a low-spot, but we
are not giving up, we will be back, we intend to get to Paris,” said Lars this
morning. In the workshop alongside the Bentley we saw Rod Wade and his Model A Ford,
merely requiring an oil change, the Model A of Jenny Mah requiring a host of
jobs sorting, including a brakes overhaul, attention to the fuel-pipe which
worryingly looks rather like a stretch of garden-hosepipe running outside the
car from the back to the engine-bay, and was also having a coil-spring added to
the rear suspension to keep the rear from collapse. The Jaguar XK120, car 66, has had a new timing-chain fitted and the engine now
runs – Alberto Bessudo and Joanin Bernard are hoping it will all stay together
now for the final charge to Paris. The Bentley of car 6, Daniel and Tony Woodcock, now will be running with only
one headlamp – the second one having fallen off for good. The Mercedes have all
run well so far, but Rob Dominy, one of the sweeper-mechanics, says three have
had trouble with modern electronics inside their distributors and had to revert
to the old-fashioned but simpler and more reliable points-system, fortunately
they were carrying spares, including Keith and Nora Ashworth in the Mercedes
fintail, car 81.  The Ford Mustang of car Brian and Chantel Shields was having new bushes fitted
to the front suspension this morning by Owen and Jamie Turner. The Rovers are
now back with us, but after fixing its front suspension, Tony Smyth has had to
have a misfire cured, the engine is now back on six-cylinders, and car 90, the
big Leyland of Gerry Crown and Matt Bryson, has attended to an oil leak on the
power-steering pump. Anton Gonnisen was attending to his suspension today after
having a leaf-spring come loose, lashed up with wire by a Russian truck driver
on his way into Samara. The Bentley of Tony Strelzow has had a new spring fitted, and Owen Turner
reckons the source of the run of punctures has been found by modifying the
insides of the tyres – it remains to be seen if this can give the couple a
trouble-free day. The Morris Oxford was given a thorough dust down and clean
this morning – the crew revealed that their car cost them just 900 to buy, and
continues to prove totally reliable. Quite a few cars needed only minor service work today, such as Rod Wade’s Model
A Ford needing an oil-change, the Porsche of Peter Lovett requiring nothing more
than a bucket of water over the roof to knock off most of the dust, and car 1,
the 14-litre La France, was getting a routine check-over. With the Rovers, the red Porsche 356, the blue Renault 4, the Jaguar XK120, and
car 64, Stan Gold’s Porsche 911 all in the car park, and even the big green
Mercury Park Lane, which has spent the best part of a week catching us up, we
will have a bigger field when we re-start in the morning – we’re all
re-energised and raring to go.The column in the results-pages show the current status of who winning a medal.
To achieve a Gold you have to be consistent in reaching designated of
checkpoints within the maximum allowance. There are 15 Vintageants on Gold, as
we leave Samara, with 12 on Silver and 9 on Bronze. Among the Classics, there
are 20 contenders up for a Gold Medal, 15 on Silver, and 16 on Bronze.
