What a day, and what a big brother.  John was the perfect host, and we had a ball!  We started out with lunch at Rudy's Country store and Bar-B-Q (and Phillips 66), the self-proclaimed "Worst Bar-B-Q in Texas".  It wasn't.  Maybe that title belongs to someone who claims to be the best Bar-B-Q in Texas.  It was wonderful, and it's a 5-minute walk from John's house.  Another 2 minutes of walking gets you to Costco or Hooters, your choice!
After lunch, we picked up John's friend Margie (not like Marjie, but like Margaret).  She is a delightful Texas gal with a ton of class and a really spunky attitude.  She and John make a very good pair!  Together we spent a delightful afternoon on the San Antonio River Walk.  If you have never been there, go! Go now!  It is a horseshoe channel of the river that runs through town.  Years ago it used to flood downtown, so they dug a bypass with flood control, leaving a mile-long loop of river through downtown, 1 story below the city.  It is lined with shops, bars, clubs, and restaurants, mostly local, but some franchises like Dick's Last Resort.  The second level is more shops and more franchise-type restaurants, with a gigantic mall at one end.  If you can't find it there, you don't need it.
We walked the entire length of the river walk after taking the tour boat ride around the circuit.  It was a great afternoon.  For dinner, we chose Boudro's, a Texas bistro.  The food was terrific, and the highlight was the guacamole made table side by the waiter.  A real show.  We ended the evening with Margie showing us her lovely home.  It is an old church remodeled by an architect into a home.  It is really beautiful, unique, and interesting.
A couple of days ago, Janet wrote me saying that her friend Steve said that La Quinta was Spanish for "Next to Denny's".  In downtown San Antonio, John pointed out the Original, numero uno La Quinta.  Janet, I have included a picture for Steve.
Tomorrow, it's off to Texarkana, Texas/Arkansas, and the first of three marathon driving days HOME.
