Well, our day started well with a nice mushroom omelet and fresh fruit at Rick and Shirley's and we started off for a long driving day.  Microsoft "Streets and Trips" had warned me that Spokane was too far for one day, so I had made reservations at the La Quinta in a small town an hour south of Spokane called "Ritzville".  What a PR ploy by the local Chamber of Commerce.  In the South, they used to describe towns like this as "2 stores, 2 whores, and a cotton gin".  This town had 2 motels, a gas station, a McDonald's and a diner.

The drive all day was BORING!.  Prairie (again), tumbleweeds, some huge farms of wheat and stuff, and NO TREES!  I always think of the state of Washington in terms of lumber, but the East side of the state is in the lee of the mountains, and is almost a desert.  If you look closely at the picture, you can see a "Dust Devil", not to be confused with the vacuum cleaner!  It is a sunny-day tornado-like thing that sucks dust upward from the desert or freshly-plowed wheatfield like a tornado.  It is the land equivalent of a water spout. (Google dust devil, it is really interesting). We must have seen 25 of them.  At about 4:30, it became obvious that we were ahead of schedule, and Spokane might be more fun than Ritzville, so Sandy got on the little computer and found a LaQuinta in Spokane.  We called from the car phone and switched the reservations.  When we got to Ritzville and saw it, were we ever glad.  Another hour and we rolled into Spokane before 6:00.  Then we found out Spokane is on Pacific time, so we would have had another hour in Hicksville.

Sandy researched restaurants in Spokane on the computer on the way in, so we were prepared, but guess what was alnost next door to the LaQuinta.  You guessed it, Hooters.  She dragged me there kicking and screaming again.  No salmon tonight!

Tomorrow we run for the border.  Cranbrook British Columbia.
