Detailed Description:Valley of Wines
The Constantia Wine Route is named after the original farm Constantia, whose legendary wines were sought after by the 18th and 19th century European aristocracy, requested by Napoleon, and praised by Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. The historic Constantia Valley has now been re-established as one of the finest wine-growing areas of the Cape.
Constantia is the birthplace of the wine farming industry in South Africa. As you drive through the beautiful historical valley it is no wonder the first Governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, chose this location for his farm, Groot Constantia.
The vineyards are situated on gentle slopes not far from the sea, and the cool breezes blowing in off two oceans are an important influence. They provide ideal cool conditions, which slow down the ripening process of the grapes and create a unique wine-growing environment.
We will visit the five producers making up the Constantia Wine Route:
Groot Constantia
Groot Constantia is the benchmark by which the heritage of the Cape is measured in terms of its history, architecture, collection, estate wines, food quality, hospitality, physical appearance, conduct and service excellence.
Klein Constantia
Klein Constantia estate, part of the farm that produced the Constantia wine prized by Europe's aristocracy in the 18th century, is considered one of South Africa's premier crus, its wines winning both local and international awards.
Buitenverwachting
Situated in the heart of the historical Constantia Valley in Cape Town, South Africa. The farm boasts an exceptional range of wines as well as one of the top restaurants in the country.
Constantia Uitsig
Accolades for the Constantia Uitsig Wines include Veritas Gold and Double Gold, Michelangela awards, a gold medal at the London International Wine Challenge, as well as listings on major airlines such as SAA and KLM.
Steenberg
It was the first farm in South Africa to be owned by a woman, Catherina Ustings (reportedly the 'other woman' in the married Simon Van Der Stel's life).
Today the farm is still in operation, and much of the wine produced from its vineyards is exported to Europe.
Additionally, we can visit The Constantia Village, in the heart of the valley. A unique shopping centre where you can indulge all your senses.
