Most of you who will read this blog already know what kind of a day it was on December 22, 2008 basically anywhere in Canada... cold, icy and with lots of snow. However, we had already postponed our departure date by one day, since the day before the snow was falling like crazy and because we weren't quite ready.

So, we left at about 10:30 in the morning under a beautiful blue sky and in very crisp air. Since all of our hearts were pumping with increased vigor due to the arrival of this greatly anticipated day, we didn't notice the cold... at first. You see Gloria, our van, does not have a functioning heater and when the temperature is -10 outside it means that it is pretty close to that inside the van. It's a good thing we brought blankets and sleeping bags, we just didn't know we would be using them so soon.

Our first concern was crossing the border. We decided to take the truck crossing and were happy we did since the wait time was only about 20min. However, we were not sure how the official would treat three dudes in there mid-twenties in a fully loaded VW van. Dan and I tossed around the possibility of a full search, but Tyler guessed right since the official asked us only a few questions and sent us on our way. Hopefully the many border crossings to come will go just as smoothly.
