Ireland?!?!
Entry 7 of 17 | show all | print this entry |
Saturday - Our trek to Ireland began at 8 am as we journeyed in a race against time from Glasgow to Stranraer to catch the ferry. We got there with 10 minutes to spare and amazingly they let us on. We drove through Belfast and got out of there as soon as possible (it was quite ugly) and headed for Dublin. In Dublin we went straight to the Guiness factory, getting pretty lost in the process (even turning the wrong way down a one way street). Nonetheless, we found our way there eventually, and got to the 7th level where Chris downed a pint of Guiness and we checked out the view over Dublin. As we expected from our drive through the city, we were not impressed, so we got in the car and left the city heading west, to get as close to Galway as possible before having to find accomodation for the night at Athlone, in the middle of Ireland. This place was okay, but not great. It is the middle of an election campaign over here, so all we see are politicians posters every 5 metres along the road! The next morning we made our way to Gort (got some photos outside St Colman's Church and some farms in Kiltartan - sorry Dad, but couldn't work out which one was the Curley farm) before heading for the west coast and the Cliffs of Moher. These were quite spectacular, but we think every tourist in Ireland was there at the same time as us. Man, the line for the ladies room was like nothing I have seen before :-).
We legged it south after this, and made it to Cork by 5pm, just in time to find some accommodation in the rain. The hotel was really nice with a king bed, which we hadn't seen in a while, nice bar with a few screaming kids, but had some Guinness none-the-less. By this time Amanda had started drinking Whiskey, which i didn't see coming? Had a great dinner and started drinking some more while watching the "Football". My team won, and this was our first night really drunk!!!
This morning we headed out to Blarney Castle to kiss the stone. This was definitely the highlight of the trip to Ireland and we have plenty of photos from here. We then hightailed it to Rosslare to make the ferry at 3, but due to slow Irish drivers (yes, worse than Aussies) didn't make it in time so got stuck here for another 6 hrs. Which brings us to now. Off to watch Spidey3. Cheers till next time.
P.S. Mum, Beau has taken tomorrow off work to catch up with us :-)
P.P.S. Sorry dad, but Ireland is SHIT!!!!!!
