C - Aaaaaahhhhh. How long have I been hanging out for this! We caught the bus to Mersing, a fishing village and jump off point for Tioman Island. We stayed overnight at a less than salubrious hotel with a shared ... well, words fail me. Suffice to say I deliberately dehydrated myself so I wouldn't need to use the convenience. Shudder. Anyway, all that was forgotten once we caught the speedboat to Tioman the next morning, headed for Moktars Place
- described in the Lonely Planet, nervewrackingly enough, as "true grit" style accommodation.
OK, so the veneer was peeling off the chalet door, the bathroom consisted of a toilet (thankfully) and a shower and that was it, but what more do you need when the beach is a mere 20 foot away.
And a practically deserted beach it was too. With a hammock.
Not much to tell other than that really, as the next three days consisted of swimming, sunning ourselves, reading, eating and sleeping.
G- Well Caths covered most everything except............ discovered a book shop in the shopping centre attached to the Petronas Towers. Fantastic. Makes the selection at Whitcoulls look distinctly mean. Books from publishers and authors I'd never heard of. Was all pretty exciting but has meant that I've had to buy another bag just for the books (20+ books. Not that clever really.) (Just means we have to head for beach number two with some urgency.)
Had a wonderful birthday on the 17th. Got up, sat in a hammock on the beach, Cath went and bought me potato chips and M&M's, continued lying in the hammock until about 4pm when I started to feel a bit hot so went back to the hut to have a lie down until dinner, got up about 8pm for a dinner of BBQ Barracuda and a burger at the beachside restaurant, then went to the beachside bar for a beer and a couple of cocktails.
Bar closed at about midnight which was probably just as well as was feeling somewhat fatigued and needing another lie-down.
Have badly sunburnt knees. Probably from the fact that I couldn't be bothered rolling over when lying in the sun. Does look well stupid.
So its our last night in Malaysia (Caths pointed out I'm ruining the continuity of this blog thing. But I'm not listening because Mrs Harris said I had to make sure she was safe. Nothing about paying any attention to her (except when she screams "Help!")). Anyway its our last night and to summarise - Malaysia isn't what was expected. Its not at all buttoned up and and serious. Its more a bit of burqa, a lot of hijab, and a sizeable amount of hot-pants and high-heels. The mix of people out and about range from the casual (more casual than NZ even), to the opulently glamorous, to the full black burqa, to the outrageously cutting edge catwalk type weirdness, to the incredibly abbreviated hemlines. And they all meet down at the shopping malls to promenade their thing. In addition most everyone seems friendly and quick to smile or have a laugh. Traveling around it ranges from the high tech Petronas Towers to the distinctly basic Tioman Islands. All of its been great. And price wise - accommodation has ranged from $20US a night in KL to $8 in Tioman. Eating well on about $20 a day for two.
So on to Saigon..........
Where I stayed:
Mohkta's Place

lifes a beach (reply) Aug 19, 2007 16:40 EST by raeleen
... you two are making us incredibly envious with all the talk of the beach and sun! You'll probably be delighted to know it hasn't stop raining here. Laughed about the 'conveniences'... remember one not so pleasant boat trip in Turkey - glad some things never change on the road to new adventures! Take good care of yourselves, can't wait to see the pics on your return x
