Arequipa  -  Our last town in Peru....

Clive's birthday and what a treat for him. He got just one birthday present - a jar of marmite ! It was actually quite a feat to obtain here in Peru and a big treat to receive (breakfasts in Peru is often just a bread roll). Never have I seen Clive so pleased with a birthday present!

The rest of the day was spent sitting on a bus going from Puno to Arequipa and as a special birthday treat, we upgraded  to first class (for $3!). This meant we got to sit downstairs on the double-decker coach in airline style 1st class seats and got to see a movie with English subtitles (but no sound). which meant we could listen to the iPod at the same time and the hours just whizzed by. The scenery was pretty good, with the Andean mountains, valleys and lakes all the way, eventually turning to a more dessert like landscape before it got too dark to see anymore. The driver however seemed to think that it was a race to get there and zoomed around the many,  many bends like Michael Schumacher on a bad day. We were pleased to have been sitting in such padded wide seats on the lower deck ! We arrived realising just how far these buses can lean without actually tipping over!

Arequipa, by bus from Puno was around 5 hours. Arriving at Arequipa Bus terminal in the dark with all the dire warnings of rogue taxi drivers, thieves and muggers still ringing in our ears from the South American Explorers Clubhouse at Cusco, it was nice to see a small old man with a sign with our name on it, sent by the hostal to collect us.

Dumping our bags in the Hostal, we head out for a walk around the centre of town, a pizza and a couple of cold, cold beers.  Clive finished his birthday watch and listening to some of his favourite music in the pizza restaurant on the big screen.
