We left Phomn Penh by bus in the morning for the trip to Kratie, a small town on the banks of a river in the north of the country. We sat down, thinking that the Bus seemed OK for such a long journey (all day). But just after setting off, the Kareoke started and we were sitting right under the only speaker. Worse still, the songs were all Cambodian and the music terrible.....a bit like chinese opera. Still, only 8 more hours to endure. Thankfully people did not join in the singing and from time to time, a Cambodian sit-com came on - whilst we could not understand a word, it was fun watching the other passengers have a laugh.

Kratie is a very quiet and tranquil place on the banks of a river which makes for fantastic sunsets, not a great deal to see apart from the local markets but a great place to chill out which we did for a couple of days before moving on by (a very crowded) bus to Stung Treng where we had to hang around for a few hours before catching a ferry across the river to get another bus to the border crossing to Siphandon 94000 islands) in Southern Lao.

So many people in Kratie wear suits during the day made out of cotton, with bright colours and patterns. In England, we would call them pyjamas and wear them to bed. Here it is obviously considered smart day wear.

Once at the border and having paid the $1 bribe to get out of Cambodia, we got a Sorngthaew through no mans land to the Lao immigration point and paid another $1 bribe to get our Lao visa stamped. (considering the number of people making this crossing, it is quite a lucrative occupation for the border police!!)Decided to stay an extra day here.
