Off to the Bay Islands in the Caribbean, namely Utila Island, which is known for its coral reefs and scuba diving. We believe that it is part of the second largest barrier reef in the world.
After a long day of travelling by bus through Honduras, we boarded a catamaran ferry in the coastal city of Ceiba and spent an hour and a half on the wavy ocean. Many of us chose to get a front seat in the bow but when we saw the captain zipping up his plastic window in the cabin, we had a funny feeling that it was going to be a wet trip. Within a half an hour we were absolutely soaked but enjoying the sun and breeze and cool water after the long bus ride.
Utila is a tiny island, only 13 km long and 5 km wide and many of the people there speak English, Spanish or Garifuna. A lot of the people are descendents from slaves that were moved from the island of San Vincent in 1795. The water is pristine and very good for scuba diving or snorkelling. I went off on a little walking tour of the island and cooled off by a good swim in the ocean. Chris decided to go out in a boat with a few others and spend the day doing some great snorkelling. The beautiful coral was very close to the surface and the colours of fish in the water were amazing. It´s too bad that we don´t have a camera that can take underwater pictures.
We stayed in a lovely little hotel called the Colibri and enjoyed their outside bar and swimming pool in a tropical setting. At night we went to an incredible little bar called The Treetanic. It was built and decorated using recycled materials on several levels in the treetops - an amazing piece of art and wonderful tasty drinks!
In the morning we left very early, awakened by the geckos, a donkey, birds, barking dogs, something snuffling the the backyard and roosters.
