Hi guys, We noticed a little late that the previous map pin was placed in the wrong place but just know that Guatemal City is not that far away from LAke Atitlan where we are presently staying.

Yesterday, the owner of the Belen Inn, arranged a shuttle van for us to travel to Antigua. The shuttle picked us up right at the front door and after picking up another Canadian and a local, we were off - out of the city and into the country. The ride was short, about 1 1/2 hours and uneventful. We arrived in beautiful, quaint Antigua and had about 2 hours to wander the streets and market before catching another shuttle to the lake. We picked up a box lunch (that´s Spanish!) and we were on our way with 3 Canadians, 2 Germans and a Belgian. The ride took a long time as there was construction on the road. At one point  we had to wait about an hour in the middle of the dust and black chicken bus fumes in the middle of the construction Guatemalan flag

. The Belgian lady had to go to the bathroom and made us all laugh. When she asked the driver to stop, the answer than came back was "imposible!", but the solution was for him to drive like hell through the winding and twisting mountain roads passing trucks, buses and animals like a crazy race car driver. Chris had trouble watching. I ¨did not look.
Finally we stopped at a restaurant. Everybody was relieved, if you know what I mean.

Lago de Atitlan. Wow! Check it out on the internet. An absolutely beautiful clean lake in the mountains. We stopped in Panajachel and took a 20 minute boat trip to San Pedro - our village for the next 10 days. When we arrived it started to rain. By the time we reached our hotel Tepepul Kaan, it was pouring! Our hostess, Amalia, walked with us in the pouring rain to show us where our Spanish school was located and we registered, soaking wet. On the way home we stopped in a little restaurant  and had a great meal. It was hard to tell what we were eating as the power went out and we ate by candlelight. The food was delicious, kind of like Thai food and plentiful. We drank Brahma beer. Total bill was $14. We didn´t have quite enough money so we are heading back today to pay up. Now the problem with having no electricity is that it gets REALLY  dark here. Maybe I need to add another "really"!!! We had to find our way back in the dark with a candle that we were given. Not an easy task but we found our hotel eventually. Pretty funny!

As it was very dark, we went to bed early as we knew we would be up with the birds.
