Where I stayed
Lucky for me, my roommate was an Australian backpacker named Kellie. We got along really well, and kept each other company for the last 3 days. We were both a little tired of travelling (I know you must all be rolling your eyes reading this, but it does get tough to constantly move around), so we took advantage of our semi-private hotel room to sleep in late every morning. We would then stroll down to Starbucks for a coffee and a muffis, walk around the city for a few hours and then eat some more - I indulged in a few Greek specialties such as gyro and spanakopita. Last night, we had dinner at a delicious Greek restaurant in an adorable square, and we went our separate ways earlier today. Kellie was heading off to Barcelona and then South-East Asia, and took a long bus to Kalambaka, where I am now.
I plan on visiting Meteora tomorrow morning, which is a crazy rock formation on top of which lie six monasteries. Unfortunately, I will rain for thw next few days, so I'm not sure how nice my pictures will turn out, but I guess we'll see! I've been really lucky in Thessaloniki as far as weather goes, as it's been hovering around 22-26 degrees. There hasn't been a cloud in the sky...only haze!
I'm enjoying Greece so far, although I feel like the locals get really annoyed when they realize I'm a tourist. I try to say hello and thank you in Greek, but I can't really go much farther. I'm also having a really hard time getting used to all the smoking, but there's no way of getting around the second-hand smoke!
Since there are no hostels in Kalambaka, I'm staying in a private room tonight - with a tv, my own shower, and room service!!!! All thos who have slept in hostels will understand my extreme joy! It's not much, but it's nice to have a room to myself for one whole night!
I'll be heading to Athens on an evening train tomorrow, will stay there for a few days and will then visit the Pelopponese region. I'll try to post some pictures soon! :)
