The last few days I spent in York were rather uneventful, especially seeing as it was cold and rainy. I arrived on Sunday evening and took a Ghost Trail tour of the city. The next morning, I took a free 2-hour tour of the city, as I had done in Bath, and then visited the York Castle Museum (which had a really neat exhibition on the sixties). York has the best-maintained medieval wall of Europe, and the area within these walls is easily walkable. It is very tourist-friendly, with explanatory and directive signs scattered across town, though it gets confusing because their streets are 'gates', their gates are 'bars', and their bars are 'pubs'! All in all, I'm glad I got to see it, but as I didn't really meet anyone, I was ready to leave.

Actually, I did meet people - three widows/widowers, strangely enough. The first during my Ghost Trail, a woman in her 60s or 70s who had lost her husband at 52, but who kept on travelling as long as she physically could, as she had done with her husband in the past. The second was my Australian roommate, a woman of 50 or so who loved to talk. And finally, Kars, a Dutch man who lost his wife just this past year. All three seemed to be glad to find a listening ear, and all looked back on their lives with some regret, now that their loved ones had died, especially seeing as none had children. In a day and age where we have so many options, and, more often than not, cannot decide which one is best for us, it makes you hope that years down the road, when you think back on your life, you will be happy with the choices you did make.

I took an early train into Edinburgh today, and checked into my hostel. I'm only here for one night, and then I leave on my three-day 'Skye High' tour of the Scottish Highlands tomorrow morning. I'll be back in this city on Friday, and will spend the weekend here. So far, its architecture is quite unlike any other city I've seen to date, and I really look forward to visiting it. It's also cold here today, so I only walked around a little. Later on, I have important, but not really fun things to do, including sewing up certain holed-clothing and doing some laundry!

I'll post some pictures when I get back, as  I'm sure I'll have much better stories then. Off the to Highlands I go...

Highland girl
Hi sweetheart, I'm glad you're taking the time to do little things and rest up a bit because your 3 tour might be exhausting. Can't wait to see pictures and hear about the people you will meet on your tour and things you did. I am so proud of you and miss you very much. Let me know if you need me to check up any other tour you may be interested in.
Love you lots

deep, have more fun (just joking)
very profound entry Julie. Though it's good to contimplate life and the choices we make, it may be a little early in your trip to be getting so philosophical...you have 2 months to go

we miss you here in montreal. and i am very jealous that you are in scotland.

No bagpipes yet...
sadly, no such Scottish music yet! The tour is going well so far...the highlands are pretty great! Ill post pictures when I get back. We're 12 people on the tour, and have a hilarious Scottish guide!

Sorry about the profound last entry...I guess that's what happens when you travel alone - you get to thinking too much!

I'll be back in Edinburgh tomorrow night, so you'll probably hear from me on Saturday. I'm glad you're enjoying the postcards :)

Thinking too much???
That comes with the climate. And that's exactly why they invented Scotch Whiskey. Cheers!!!!!
