As I was traveling to the airport it occurred to me that London had
grew on me a little bit. My first impression was anything but
positive - I just found it big and noisy - but after a few days I
started to enjoy it. In fact, I'm looking forward to going back.
So off I was to Iceland. I have read and seen such great things
about this country I was really excited to see if it all was
true. Today (the 17th) is the National Independence Day and the
party is supposed to be one of the best in Europe
After settling in to the hostel and getting something to eat, I headed
downtown. As it turned out several others from the hostel had the
same idea. So luckily I had some company: A young
Swiss/German couple, another Swiss/German woman, and a Japanese
girl now living in Holland. All were very proficient in English
so communication was no problem. Wandering around the festival
area we found 3 stages set up in the streets with a large variety of
music at each one. Some of the acts had to be seen to be
believed. After a while I was wondering, "is this the kind of
music they really listen to or are they actually trying to be funny?"
Looking around at the crowd I noticed something curious
the stereotype that everyone is blond and blue-eyed is not true;
there were no more blonds there than in Canada or the US.
Second, everyone in the crowd seemed to be either 16 yrs. old or
45. I thought that was curious. Perhaps that 18-35 yr old
demographic was preparing for the parties afterward. Alas, my
companions all called it a night before midnight and not feeling up to
trying to penetrate the uber-chic nightclubs by myself, I was forced to
do the same. Oh well.
