We arrived nice and early on the 19th in Ban Lung which allowed us to full get our bearings on the area and get to grips with what we might want to do there for the next couple of days. We were quickly swept off by a very friendly Khmer man who spoke good English and although me and Zac both knew he would be trying to sell us things we went along with him and ended up staying for cheap at his hostel and eating a fair amount of food at his sister's place (oh how easily persuaded we are) but they were all very nice and everything was very reasonable so we didn't begrudge him for it. We realized that Ban Lung's main attraction is the nature that surrounds it which we were very pleased about as its a big part of what we look for in places to visit. We spent the 20th just on pedal bikes around the local area which had a nice lake to look around and large Buddhist Pagoda with an enormous sleeping Buddha up on top of a hill, our first impressions were pretty good, and the people around the area all seemed very nice so we were feeling fairly settled.
For Zac's birthday we decided that we would venture out of the local area and hire some small scooters (for only $5 for the day)- and yes for those of you worrying we did insist on wearing helmets! It turned out to be an awesome day, we spent a good portion of it at this large crater lake which is believed to be an dormant volcano, but it had the most gorgeous water for swimming and was surrounded by the vast jungle- so really a beautiful place. We also headed to a couple of waterfalls and just went out for a drive into the Cambodian countryside. The evening was not so brilliant however- seeing as it was Zac's birthday we felt obliged to try and find a bar or club somewhere even though it was clear Ban Lung wasn't really the party place. Oh if only we had given up at that stage... if only. We were directed to the closest club by the woman who ran the restaurant where we had been eating regularly and had hired the scooters- we were told it was 1 km away and was obvious, so after a km of walking we spotted a sign for the "Dance Club" so naturally assumed this was it... it was not. We walked to the The Dance Club and discovered it was a "Karaoke club" so naively we assumed it was a place for Karaoke so thought we'd give it a try, when we walked through the gates we were approached by a security guard who in the most seedy hushed voice I have ever heard said "There is no disco here, only Karaoke"... ok, yeah that's fine (in our minds- great a drink and karaoke...wrong) he repeated again "Only Karaoke... you wanna see?" "Yes mate, brilliant, cheers". When we walked into the very bright flashing building we were greeted by two rows of women who immediately stood up, which we realized afterwards was to allow us to choose who we wanted... yes that's right, we had inadvertently walked into a brothel. This became very clear when we walked down this single corridor which had doors leading off into bedrooms where a CD of fake Karaoke music was being played and the door at the end was just a storage cupboard, needless to say we left fairly swiftly.
We had one more day in Ban Lung which we spent on the scooters again out in the countryside, we found a few more waterfalls including one which you could shower under and one that you could walk completely behind under a huge overhang all in all a very nice couple of days spent out in country.
