Route: From Waldport, OR to Newport, OR (and return)
Kilometres: 66

We were based in Waldport for one more night, so we though to just stick a bit close and explore the area. We drove north to Newport, which was only about 30mins away, and started our day proper with a bowl of chowder at a place called the Chowder Bowl in Nye Beach area – we were quite amused by the massive group of teenage boys from Memphis that were also in the restaurant, and could quite sympathise with the group leader and the looks of the all the people also in the restaurant (they were actually quite well-behaved!). Yum chowder yet again, not a bad streak on this trip!

We continued a couple more miles north to the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area (odd name, we know) – which we guessed is another name for 'really fantastic park'. In this area it is quite cool because a short walk from the Information Centre we made it to the tidepools, which we could walk out onto and explore. Unfortunately also washed up on shore was a seal, apparently having been there for weeks, not looking the greatest, nor smelling the freshest : ( Alas, it was quite cool to wander the shores and take in the (other) scenery. Plus there were heaps of seals about on the rocks, and also further out there were a lot of colonies of different types of birds. And of course there was a lighthouse (which we decided not to line up to climb the stairs to the top).

After a quick stop at Fred Meyer to pick up some new sunnies (mine were hanging onto their last days after a crack in the frame) and some other provisions, we made our way to the Rogue Brewery in Newport. This was a really neat brewery, which actually walks you straight through the brewery to get to their bar/restaurant. We had a hard time choosing from the 20 (or so) beers on tap for our tasting platters, but that didn’t matter as the bartenders were so enthusiastic they just kept bringing out extra ones just to taste, or to even mix in with the others (we brought some home for that micro-brew fest you promised Kev!). They had some truly excellent brews, and it was only highlighted more with some fantastic eats of spicy bean dip and kobe beef tacos. Cam even tried the single malt whiskey, and we were gutted they didn’t have about 15 others on the extensive menu that we would’ve loved to try. Definitely a stop for any beer lover! With a couple bottles of beer to bring home, we drove back to Waldport and enjoyed one more night in our waterfront cabin.
