On the second day we actually took the house boat into the backwaters. It was very relaxing, and with three workers on the boat looking after the three of us it was real luxury. We saw lots of birds (kingfishers!) and ducks, and got a bird's eye view from our terrace lookout. Wow!
House boating on the back waters in Kerala is supposed to be one of the highlights of India and it didn't disappoint us. The first day we decided to do a little canoe trip with a guide through some of the smaller canals where the larger boats can't go and it turned out to be a great decision. The guide picked us up and we took a ferry to his little village where his wife had made breakfast for us. From there he paddled us through the small canals where the women were all doing their laundry on the side of the canal and then everything was very quiet which is a rarity in India. His wife made us lunch we paddled for a little more before heading back to Alleppy for the evening. The views we had of life in the Kerala backwaters seemed to be from a movie. Incredibly picturesque and serene.
