Have been in bern for 3 days or so now travelled down from Paris with a little bit of excitement in the form of losing my InterRail pass, passport and bank card in one fell swoop. After running around like a headless chicken we resigned ourselves to getting off the train when an nnouncement (in french) came over the tannoy some nice old french guy told us what it said and i found a gaurd who said he would give me my stuff while we were on the train hooray. After that we had a made dash through a passport check between trains at Geneve and the shocking thing was a swis train was late. There was some really nice scenery scattered all over the place some got some great (and not so great) photos. When we got to Bern and once we knew where we were we managed to find our way to the hostel without getting lost for once, only to find it was full but we found another by the river so it was really nice. Went for a wander around town to find bank machines, nternet and a really nice pizza/pasta place.
Realised how great a choice coming to Bern was when we found out that we arrived the day before the Swiss national day (01/08) It did mean some things were closed (ok a lot of things) but it was worth it.There was an amazing firework display which we watched from a hugely crowded bridge (which eventually was closed to the trams and cars, there was also a procession of people in armour towing a canon. People were generally crazy letting fireworks of all over the place some going off at street level. There was music, drink and people everywhere so we wandered around with a couple of people from our dorm Inder (spelling??) from Ireland and a guy from south Korea whos name i can`t even pronounce nevermind spell. Got back and collapsed into bed after deciding to spend an extra night
Okey Dokey started off the third day with a few postcards, breakfast and putting in our first wash (yes i am keeping clean). Went and got a proper swiss army knife from switzerland with my name engraved which was pretty cool. Then went swimming in the river Aare which is really fast flowing (comes of the glaciers and snow so a little cold as well) you can just glide down the river, also jumped in off a footbridge few times which was great fun. Went and got a burger from a little place next to the river which was rather tasty. Wandered around town a bit more and bought some actually swiss chocolate from a shop called Tschirren it is (read was) Fantastic!! Went back to the river and tried to catch pneumonia again. Returned to the hostel for a shower and headed out for Dinner which was delicous and spent the evening gambling with M&M`s
Well that Was Bern which was really enjoyable will be tough to beat but off to Vence later today and we don`t have accomodation sorted out so i could be sleeping in a train station.
P.S i will get round to putting some photos in these entries i promise :)
