It was meant to be a wonderful day - so why did I wake up to the sirens of the Grand Canyon Railway and teaming rain? Our day at the Canyon was not looking promising. After breakfast of coffee, which was like Mississippi mud, and a bagel with cream cheese and some suspicious looking chocolate bits - we started getting organised for the day.

Glenn had bought a picnic lunch to eat after our planned strenuous walk into the Canyon - comprising of two rotisserie chickens and assorted other food - you know a light snack for two!  We also searched Williams for some wet weather gear and ended up with two, very fetching, plastic ponchos - the one size fits all variety.

It's an hours drive to the Canyon from Williams - so we arrived in time to start our walk into the canyon via Bright Angel trail. I had been keen on the two day mule ride into the base of the canyon - but we should have booked 13 months ago - so that wasn't going to happen! We did get to see the mules - and that was enough of an authentic experience for me. Sitting on top of one of those animals for two days - may not have been as much fun as I had anticipated.

We started the walk in  pouring rain and walked down to the first station 1.5 miles into the Canyon. I'm so glad that Glenn suggested that we turn around at that point as the 1.5 miles uphill was somewhat more strenuous and the weather had changed so that I was as red as a beetroot by the time we reemerged from the Canyon.

In the afternoon we took a helicopter flight over the Canyon and realized just how large it  is - about 450km long!

A small incident in the early evening when I thought we were running out of petrol and we were in the back blocks of the park;visions of spending the night in the car - sharing a rotisserie chicken for dinner and bedding down in the car for the night - thankfully that was not to be!

Safety back in Williams - after a fantastic day.................tomorrow Vegas!
