On the first day we headed towards Albany on the highway, planning to stop at a camping group near the Stirling Range National Park on the way to overnight in our campervan. I should probably mention at this point that our van was called Harry Potter and had its name and a picture of said fictional character spray painted rather largely across the sides of the van - we got a few looks!
The two main rules of hiring the camper given by the company were don't drive at night and don't drive on unsealed roads
The next day we went hiking in Porongorup National Park (every little patch of wilderness in Australia becomes a 'National Park' with a nice entry fee...) and drove on towards Albany where we were glad to find a caravan park with a fire (and a k-mart that sold sleeping bags and snuggies! Every good campervan trip needs a snuggie).
The next few days we looped round the south west coast, stopping to do a treetop walk at Walpole, for some award winning pies in Denmark and to climb a giant 75 metre tree, amongst other things. The views from the tree were amazing, even if climbing it was a particularly scary experience - nothing to break your fall with only metal poles for steps.
We saw lots of trees, some beautiful scenery, a ton of wildlife (mostly living), ate lots of cookies, had many a campervan signalong (predominantly to R Kelly's 'The World's Greatest) and just generally engaged in childish behaviour.
Back in Perth I am now faced with the reality of a rapidly depleting budget. I had intended to do some fruit picking work but its all rather a hassle. I have therefore spontaneously booked a flight to Melbourne leaving in the early hours of tomorrow morning. I will spend a few days exploring there and then hopefully manage to do some 'WWOOFing' (WWOOF stands for 'Willing Workers on Organic Farms'). Its a program where you do a few hours work each day on an organic farm and in exchange you get free accomodation and food. I have heard good things from other people I have spoken to so figure I will give it a whirl!
