Started the day collecting seashells in the Atlantic then drove to Roanoke Island. Roanoke Island is known as The Lost Colony at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. This is where the British first tried to start a settlement on the new land. The new settlers had a very tough time surviving on the Island along with tensions with the local Indians. The settlers sent the Captain back to England for more provisions and help. It took the Captain 2-3 years to get a ship to return because of the British/Spanish war. Brittan won the war and the Captain sailed back to find no settlement or any trace of his people left on the island.
We then drove north on Boddie Island to Kill Devil Hills the Wright Brothers National Memorial near Kitty Hawk. You can see the site of the worlds first powered flight on December 17 2003. The four flights, two by each brother Orville and Wilbur Wright were 12 seconds & 120 feet, 12 seconds & 175 feet, 15 seconds & 200 feet and 59 seconds & 852 feet. We then drove north to Williamsburg KOA
