Brian's parents suggested that while in San Luis Obispo we should check out the Madonna Inn, if at least to have a drink and check out the grounds..we decided to stay there instead.  This is a zany place to say the least.  Its a flashy themed hotel on the edge of town with tons of character. The owners have owned the hotel for over 50 years and keep building upon it.  The best way to describe this hotel is that it reminded us of the Tavern on the Green in NYC..lot of lights, mirrors and colors.  Each hotel room has a different theme.. we stayed in the Sweepstakes room.

The town itself is great.  Everyone is so nice, happy and friendly.  The town is in a canyon about 30 miles from the beach, given its location it a haven for mountain biking and hiking with endless trials.  When we arrived it was late in the afternoon so we lounged around by the pool and grabbed some sushi at night.  However, the second day we were a bit more ambitious and did some hiking then went into town for the final Laker / Celtics NBA game.  That evening there was a street festival and the town was well energized for the final game, though there were no riots as were experienced in LA, there was tons of cheering.

On Friday we headed north on PCH and visited Hearst Castle and Big Sur.  The drive alone was beautiful.  Hearst Castle was amazing, we only did the main tour that was offered, you could get lost in the place and not be found for years.  Big Sur we only did a quick drive through.  We originally planned on staying in Pebble Beach for a couple of nights, but with the US Open Golf Tournament taking place it was impossible to find a place to stay.  With that said, we decided to push forward to San Francisco and come back another time and hike Big Sur and visit Carmel and Pebble Beach.

The Hearst Castle is truly amazing and looks like you had great weather to drive the beautiful PCH (which can be dangerous when the frequent fog rolls in.)
