Since we both have been to San Diego a few times in the past we decided to head to La Jolla, CA instead.  As expected La Jolla was beautiful.  Our hotel was right next to Torey Pines National Park, where the 2008 Golf US Open was played.  Since the weather wasn't that great, continuous overcast, we did some hikes through Torey Pines which outlined the shore line and eventually dumped us on to the beach.  Its amazing to see cliffs, then beaches, the cliffs, etc.  Then every pocket possible you find surfers and/or skateboarders...everyone is doing it.

The first night we walked around downtown La Jolla but the next night we went north up to Del Mar and Solana beaches.  All were beautiful and worth visiting.  While in Del Mar we learned of the Del Mar racetrack and how everyone gears up for Opening Day which is scheduled for mid July.  Supposedly the town goes crazy on that day and all day parties are held at neighboring pubs, lounges and restaurants.

Restaurants worth mentioning:
Brigantine - Del Mar:  This is a great place to go for happy hour and it over looks the Del Mar racetrack so gets packed on opening day.
Sushi on the Rocks - La Jolla:  Really good sushi and fresh
