After breakfast we decided to explore some of Olympia, which seemed eerily quiet  but it was a Monday morning.  The seagulls were noisy (reminded Flo of Folkestone!) but the streets were empty and it did seem a case of asking "where is everybody?"  After our visit to the fountains, we stopped for a small coffee, which gave everyone a much needed caffeine hit as the jet lag was still evident.

We checked out at about midday and set off for Portland but had to take a small detour on route to visit a shopping mall!  However, it was not a patch on the Pink Palace and only Flo managed to buy something which must be a record!   We stopped at an American diner for lunch  and arrived in Portland late afternoon.   Portland sits on the Willamete River and has 10 bridges crossing it and you sweep over the ridge and see all of the view in front of you.  Portland obviously has a thriving dock and shipping industry and you can see the logging plants along the river banks.

Surprisingly enough the traffic around Portland and Olympia has been heavy but we have fortunately avoided most of the jams but it does remind me of the M25 - 3 or 4 lanes of fast moving traffic with cars right on your tail. Some of the American lorries have been rather aggressive in their
over taking as well. Portland is known as the City of Roses and it is rather fitting that we are staying at Rose Cottage B & B for the next few nights.

Our B & B is not really a cottage, as we have our own self contained suite of rooms and our hostess, Sally is a lovely, friendly lady who went out of her way to make us welcome.  Still rather jet lagged, we spent an evening in and tried to catch up on some much needed sleep.
