Where I stayed

Flag of Vietnam  , Ho Chi Minh City,
Tuesday, April 15, 2014

April 15, 2014, Tue: We have finally arrived on the final day of our tours since beginning this journey on April 3rd.  As you can see, we have seen much, traveled a whole lot by boats, coach, several kinds of richshaws, private vehicle, and by walking.   The diversity of experience was so broad, it's difficult to describe what was the most interesting or awe-inspiring, but learning about their history, eating the local foods and drinks, and seeing several cultural shows and how most of the people live their lives in these two countries were educational and rewarding.

Today was packed with two important sites within Vietnam; the Cu Chi Tunnels, and the Cao Dai Temple north of Ho Chi Minh City.

Cu Chi Tunnels
We were picked up by our driver and guide at 8am for our drive to visit the Cu Chi Tunnels that stretched over 120 miles but more than a thousand miles in total, the network of tunnels that stretched as far as the Cambodian border at its height.  They included meeting rooms, kitchens, hospitals, and living quarters, surrounded by traps for the invading enemies.   Over 43,000 Vietnamese died defending the tunnels.

What is Cao Dai?
COPIED FROM THE WEB
Cao Dai (a.k.a. Dao Cao Dai or Caodaism) is a syncretist Vietnamese religious movement with a strongly nationalist political character. Cao Dai draws upon ethical precepts from Confucianism, occult practices from Taoism, theories of karma and rebirth from Buddhism, and a hierarchical organization (including a pope) from Roman Catholicism. Its pantheon of saints includes such diverse figures as the Buddha, Confucius, Jesus Christ, Muhammad, Pericles, Julius Caesar, Joan of Arc, Victor Hugo, and Sun Yat-sen.

After our visit to Cao Dai, we were taken to a restaurant in town for lunch.   It was just too much food.  They served us about six different dishes including soup.   The food just kept coming.

When we returned to the hotel, we went up to the terrace bar for a drink and cigar.  We met a guy visiting from Thailand.  After a shower and change of clothes, we ventured out to find a restaurant for dinner.  We went to the El Gaucho Argentine Steakhouse.   We started with a pork and beef sausage, and I had the baby back ribs for my entree which was very, very, good.   Alexander had a steak.

Another full tour day, and I was sort of glad this was our last day.

Since my flight was at 12:30pm the following day, the driver and guide picked me up at 9:30 for my transfer to the airport.   They picked up Alexander at 12:30 for his 3:30 flight.

That's all she wrote.   I hope you enjoyed the pictures and my somewhat blog of this journey.
