Nov 8: Today was our transfer day from Prague to Dresden with a tour stop-over at the interesting sandstone rock formations at Basteipark that was formed over one million years ago by water and the elements.  The rock formations tower over 600 feet above the valley floor and the Elbe River.  The Bastei have attracted tourists for over 200 years.

DRESDEN:
A brief on Dresden: Dresden has a population of 500,000, and Old Dresden was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.   The architecture is Baroque although the Dresden Palace has every style period of European design.

Poets like Johann Wolfgang Gothe, Friederick Schiller, and Heirnrich von Kleist represents the famous names in art, music, literature, and science, and the fame they have brought to Dresden.

Dresden was part of the GDR under Soviet control during the cold war.  How they have recovered from that period to current times and its cultural influence of Germany throughout its history is phenominal.

As a frequent traveler with Grand Circle Travel (21-trips), my stateroom 100 had a vase of flowers, a bottle of champagne, and an invitation to the Captain's table for dinner on the first day.
The other perks for frequent travelers are better accommodations at hotels (such as the pre-cruise optional tour from Warsaw to Prague on this trip), pins of tours, and VIP service from the Tour Directors.

Our tour today was a 3-hour walking tour of Old Dresden. It is a wonder that they were able to reconstruct many of the important buildings of this city to their original splendor, because most of the city was destroyed during WWII.  The Dresden church (Church of Our Lady), the Royal
Palace, and the opera house are the buildings with most of the local history.

From aviewoncities.com:
The Goldener Reiter (Golden Rider), a gilded equestrian statue of Augustus the Strong is one of Dresden's best known landmarks.Goldener ReiterThe statue, showing the Elector of Saxony and King of Poland dressed as a Roman Emperor, stands at the Hauptstrasse, the main pedestrian boulevard in Dresden's Neustadtdistrict, just across the Augustusbridge from the Schlossplatz.
