NOTE: The Daintree Rainforest and Great Barrier Reef are the only natural wonders that are UNICEF World Heritage Sites that are adjacent to each other.

CAPE TRIBULATION; August 14.

We were coached from Port Douglas to Cape Tribulation today, and arrived at the UNICEF World Heritage Site, Daintree Rain Forest. We had a couple of stops along the way by the seashore to take pictures of the Great Barrier Reef/Coral Sea. Our accommodations at the Ferntree Rainforest Lodge for two nights was one of my favorites of this journey. We were taken for a walk to the beach by our Tour Director after we checked into our cabins.   We walked past a supermarket and bar along the way that looked inviting, so Pino, Julian and I returned here the following day for some beer.

August 15: After breakfast, we began our exploration of Cape Tribulation with a half-day of varied activities that included a guided walking tour of the Cooper Creek Wilderness rain forest with a local expert.  We learned that one-thousandths of this continent contains 40% of its flora, 25% of its reptiles (including crocodiles), 20% of its birds, and 33% of its marsupials. This national treasure contains some of the oldest vegetation on this planet that was established 130 million years ago.   The oldest trees are some 3,000 years old.   Of 19 primitive plant families on earth, 12 are found in the Daintree. Some of the interesting plants found in the rainforest are, 1. idiot fruit – is one of the most primitive
of all flowering plants, and is poisonous. 2. blue quandongs is a giant in the rainforest, and has a blue fruit. (from web site: Blue quandong  Blue quandong - Elaeocarpus grandisThese rainforest giants soar high above the surrounding canopy and can reach heights of 40 metres or more. Their tall pale trunks are buttressed at the base to assist in supporting such a tall tree. Blue quandong is also a very fast growing tree and has become popular in revegetation and cabinet timber projects. The leaves of this tree turn a deep red just before they fall, making the tree's appearance quite striking.Masses of frilly white flowers are produced in autumn and can develop into a blue fruit, up to 20mm across, which fall in early summer. Inside the fruit is a highly ornamental stone that has been used to make jewellery.)  3. wild ginger contains poison, and 4. wait-a-while vine has small spikes that grab
clothings and can rip skin, and the only way to remove them is to move in reverse to detach the vine.

We were given the time after lunch on our own. Some went to the beach to relax, and a few of us went to the local bar to have some beer.    A group of motorcycle riders came in during our brew time.
