Phnom Penh as a tourist
Entry 56 of 67 | show all | print this entry |
Phnom Penh is a pretty cool little city to spend some time doing not too much. I've done some of the sights here - Wat Phnom, The National Museum, Olympic Stadium, Central Market, Russian Market, Grand Palace & Pagoda, etc... but I haven't done 2 of the main ones - S-21 (torture centre) and The Killing Fields. I've been meaning to go to them but in all honesty I don't think I could hack it. I've read a lot into the Khmer Rouger regime and what they did, as well as spoken to many Khmer people who had to endure those times. I think it would be too difficult to put myself through these places, but at least I know more about the whole Pol Pot era than most.
I guess I have been relaxing more than usual here, and partying a fair amount too. I randomly bumped into a guy I shared a dorm with in Byron Bay, Australia, as well as meeting up with the Gijs and Nico in the Heart of Darkness. The Cambodians know how to party too, so it has made for some good nights out, and lazy days after. I actually slept until 2pm the other day - it was like being at uni again! Cambodia is a country I have very much enjoyed, and I feel as though I need to come back some time - maybe to teach, or something similar. Who knows! This is the problem with travelling; you end up having so many ideas about the future you don't know what you're doing next.
Actually I do know what I'm doing next... I'm flying to Kuala Lumpur to meet up with Baulchy, where I will sleep on the sofa in his 4/5 start hotel suite. It's gonna too much luxury! I'm looking forward to meeting up with him for a few beers, especially as his course is pretty much finished.
