Another stamp in the passport - this time BURMA
Entry 38 of 67 | show all | print this entry |
Having done all the trekking and animal shows and stuff, we basically didn't do too much in Chiang Mai. On Tuesday we hit the beers quite hard and had a big night out, going to Bubbles nightclub and then Spiceys again. We always ended up there!
The previous night wrote yesterday off, as I had my biggest hangover since I've been away. I could barely move. I got up to get dome food at 7pm but had to go back to bed as I thought I was going to pass out! Ross came good and brought back a burger and chips for me. My first non-Thai food since I got here. We had an early night too, as we had to be up at 5.30am this morning!
I managed to get up alright in the end, and sorted everything out so that we got on a mini-bus at 7am. We were up early as we were leaving Chiang Mai for pastures new. The bus drove for about an hour and a half and stopped at some hot sprongs, but I wasn't that impressed as I've seen better ones in New Zealand. We headed on, driving for 2 more hours to get to the border town of Mae Sai, where we stopped for a free lunch. Then out of all our group me and Ross were the only ones to cross over to Burma (Myanmar). It cost us 500 baht, and we were only there for about an hour, but it was worth it to get the stamp in the passport. Burma itself didn't strike me to be a place I'd want to spend much time anyway... I got pestered to buy cigarettes, smoking pikes, swords, and viagra - I'm 22 for goodness sake!!!
After getting back into Thailand, we drove on to the Golden Triangle, where you can see Thailand, Laos and Burma in one picture. It is also where the opium wars were, although I couldn't seem to get hold of any - joke. After getting the cheesy photos we went and looked at some MORE temples...
We got the minibus to drop us off in Chiang Rai instead of driving us all the way back to Chiang Mai when we would have to leave there tomorrow anyway. To be honest the trip was abit crap if you weren't trying to extend your VISA by going to Burma. So much driving and not much else....
We found a pretty nice guesthouse in Chiang Rai and I've got a double bed tonight. Sweet! Only having a few beers tonight as we have to get a bus to Chiang khong, which is on the border to Laos. We stay there overnight, then get on a slow boat to Luang Prabang which takes 2 days. Hopefully I'll find somewhere to watch the rugby in Laos. We'll see!
