Good bye Byron... eventually...
Entry 21 of 67 | show all | print this entry |
Time for an update! Having had a quality time in Byron, meeting loads of cool people, we eventually got round to leaving. It is one of those places that people go to for a couple of days and end up staying for a month. It is understandable, as it is such a chille dout place.
In the time that we were in Byron (since the last update) we had a few more barbeques on the beach, played lots of volleyball, did a lot of swimming in the sea and pool, and hung out in the hostel with some cool peeps. A particular mention needs to be given to "Ze Germans" - Thomas, Tom & Harry - three of the nicest blokes you could ever meet. We spent a lot of time hanging out with them before they left. Also to Tal & Nitsun, two Israeli guys who were so much fun and said we are the first Westerners that they could have a laugh with. They said we can stay with them in Israel when England play there - I'm away still so I'll have to pass on the bombs! Another cool person was Gemma, from London/Essex, who cracked me up non-stop.
As well as hanging out on different beaches I also had a crack at surfing, even though I hadn't had any lessons. Me, Carl & Lyndon hired some boards and had a go. Lets just say I'm not a natural, so the lessons will happen further up the coast. I hate being bad at things!!! Carl managed to put his tooth through his lip, and smash his ear up so we dropped him off at A&E for a few stitches!
On Sunday we went to Nimbin, on Jim's Alternative Tours. Everyone has to do this trip. Nimbin is basically a pure hippy town full of lots of strange people trying to sell you drugs. We visited the Hemp Museum, and had a couple of beers in a bar there. The trip also included a visit to the Minyon Falls and Paul Recher's place. Paul has planted a whole forest in the last 28 years, and his land has now become a National Park. That is true activism!
We stayed longer in Byron than we had planned because everywhere in Surfers Paradise was fully booked as it was Schoolies Week. I got a call from Ze Germans one day though saying they had sorted us out a place to stay as we should visit it for at least a day. So on we went..
