Leaving Queenstown..... eventually...
Entry 18 of 67 | show all | print this entry |
Ok, so we spent a fair few more days in Queenstown than originally planned. Its a cool place but I think we burnt out a bit from the partying in the end. It was good to meet up with Alex and Lisa again, and the rest of the original bus crew!
I actually managed to get some more exercise in though, including ajob around Queenstown Gardens and a 4 hour bike ride with Kelly. I was absolutely shattered after that, particularly as I hadn't eaten all day. I honestly didn't think we would make it back to Queenstwon, and I was getting stressed, which Kelly found amusing, which in turn stressed me out even more!
We also did some more luge-ing, as it is cheap and passes an hour or so, and is good fun. I also beat Ad at crazy golf, after a remarkable comeback over the last few holes. we went round a par 38 in 70 something so it was clearly a high standard!
Big applause to Ad, who completed the Bungy Thrillogy by jumping the world's highest bungy (now the South African one has shut down due to a death!). I gotta say I didn't think he'd do it, buthe's got the DVD to propve it so fair play!!! I gave thatr one a miss, purely for financial reasons..... honest! No, I seriously didn't like the idea of jumping from still. I much rather run off a bridge than jump. Bit strange really.
Our last night in Qtown can best be described as large!!! We started having a few beers at about 3pm, got on the vodka at home about 5.30pm, was in bars at about 9pm and got in at about 6.45am!! Our coach was booked to leave at 7.50am. Needless to say we missed our bus to Christchurch, which is a 10hr drive, so we got a plane instead! Not the cheapest thing to do but I'm glad we did!
The reason we were up all night may have something to do with this drink I got off some hench bloke called Rueben. It turns out he was Rueben Wiki, the NZ Rugby League captain and record cap holder!!! It says on Wikipedia that he drinks a bowl of Kava, a drink made from some tree root, and that helps give him longevity in rugby. Basically, I drank 9 cups of the stuff and it tastes of mud. It also makes your tongue and mouth go numb, and creates a sense of euphoria - that explains the crazy dancing! I have since learnt that Kava is banned in some countries, but Pacific Islanders love it. When in Rome...
We're in Christchurch at the moment, which is known to be the most English city in NZ. That explains the fact that there is nothing to do here, and there are a lot more scumbags in the streets.. We're just having a chill day before leaving NZ for Australia. The plan of action is to stay in either Bondi or Coogee and get a start on the tan, then go to the GB vs AUS rugby league game (pre-game drinks with Ad, me and Simon if anyone is interested...), then make our way up the coast in time for the 1st test in Brisbane!
FINAL THOUGHT We both feel a bit gutted to be leaving New Zealand. We've been to some of the most amazing places, and met so many quality people. That is what makes a trip, so thanks to all you guys! Keep in touch, and I'll see some of you in Sydney!!!!

Is Aus ready for you two? (reply) Nov 2, 2006 02:14 EST by sch
Hi Chris & Ad,
Really good to catch up with your activities and getting more jealous with each read.
Do hope you and your luggage arrive safely in Australia. You have obviously had several experiences of a life time in NZ - wonder what you will be doing to beat those in Aus. Sure you will find something to do!! Enjoy the sunshine too-we've had the first frost here!! Take care, Mum & Dad xx
