I starting planning this trip to NYC even before I left the US in mid January. Tanya's parents were in on it as was her sister Angelina and sister's boyfriend Randall (who both live in NYC). Tanya was feeling sad and lonely because I wasn't going to be in town for Valentines day...so she decided back in January to spend a long weekend with her sister. The plan was formed and all I had to do was to make it happen.
Flying 10,000 miles in economy class for a 4 day in the U.S. does sound crazy....but it actually wasn't too bad. I found a great fare on Emirates which routed me from Hyderabad to Dubai for a short layover...then direct to NYC
The flight to Dubai was uneventful...I slept most of the way. Dubai was great because I had Starbucks and a blueberry muffin. Finally we boarded the "big plane". The entire bottom deck is coach...it it was only about 30% full. I had a row of 5 seats to myself plus enough pillows and blankets to make me a nice cozy bed. The entertainment system was amazing...better than most business class that I've flown. A few movies and a few hours sleep later and we were already making our descent into NYC. After collecting my luggage and catching a train to Brooklyn, I found Angelina's and Randall's apartment. After catching up with them we went to dinner where I had an amazing hamburger...god I miss red meat.
Tanya's flight was of course delayed so she didn't arrive until several hours later than I did...in fact we were all asleep when she arrived. When I heard her clomping up the stairs, I hid in the kitchen while she came in and starting chatting with her sister.
The rest of our long weekend was spent in the city, shopping, eating, hanging with Angelina and Randall, meeting new friends and relatives, eating more and really enjoying our time together. We even caught up with an old friend from the Ananda Spa in Rishikesh at the Met Museum (Bobby) and had a great lunch with her. We ended up doing Sunday brunch as a great place in DUMBO (down under Manhattan bridge overpass) and even managed to grab a drink with Laju (old Hyderabad friend). Sadly the time went by quickly but even a little time with Tanya is better than no time...and she agreed.
The flight home was equally empty...so lot's of room to stretch out and sleep. In Dubai, I boarded my flight to Hyderabad...and while it was a smaller plane, it was still a jumbo jet. The interesting thing was it was full of Indian laborers who were leaving Dubai because of the economic melt down there and the overall lack of jobs. These guys proceeded to drink every ounce of whiskey on the plane...because of course it was free. I minded my own business and watch some more movies for the 3 hour flight to Hyderabad.
I was a short...but very sweet trip to the US!
