We took the straightforward option and flew to Mumbai, saving ourselves 3-4 days overland (and our remaining wits) and we're now kicking ourselves for not having flown everywhere (4 carriers go to most places and they are all pretty cheap).
Our Delhi-induced fear of big cities meant we only allowed for an afternoon in Mumbai, but this has proved to be unfounded. Mumbai is certainly massive and sprawling, but in our very limited time here it certainly has a more modern and affluent feel. It of course has its fair share of desperate povery and slums, but the tech-driven economy means cleaner streets and better facilities (there are also a few great book shops). Even still its hard to believe than in such a vast country one city generates 40% of the GDP.
As the train to Goa is leaving at 11pm (allegedly) we have even had a chance to experience Indian nightlife, the first city to have any! If we were to do this trip again (may be next year), we would certainly fly into Mumbai and miss out Delhi altogether.
