Fair, enough!

We had a shorter than intended stop-over in Alwar (via Delhi, again, OK so we caught the wrong train, it had to happen sooner or later) before arriving in Pushkar, Rajasthan in time for the annual camel fair. It seems the camels had caught wind of our plans and had left en masse 2 days before. The remainder of the week is given over to religious and cultural events (Pushkar is home to one of only two Bhramin temples and a holy lake). We spent the last few days touring the massive fair, complete with two very rickety looking ferris wheels, along with what felt like most of Rajasthan and a substantial number of camera toting tourists. The fair sold everything from pakoras to pitchforks and kept up a frantic pace 24 hrs a day. It attracts many of the local villagers who add a great splash of colour with their brightly coloured turbans and saris.
After as few days of human sardines in the baking sun, and a few too many encounters with the frankly rubbish pickpockets, we sought refuge in the garden restaurants.
We are heading back to Jaipur later this afternoon (a travel agent bought the tickets). Caroline and Mark More thumbnails ...
