New York Times, Travel Section Article on San Miguel de Allende::
I keep trying to think of what are the reasons that make San Miguel a very special city. Obviously the large, English speaking population, relatively speaking, that live here is an important factor, and the great wealth that they bring to San Miguel - but there must be other reasons - it is an internationally recognized art centre - San Miguel attracts creative people to it - it is a very significant city in Mexican history. When you live someplace you are constantly picking up useless and irrelevant information about that place that later turns out to not be as useless and irrelevant as you may have originally thought. Apparently, because San Miguel is a World Designated Heritage site, money comes into San Miguel to maintain its Designated World Heritage status from many different sources - the United Nations Designated World Heritage Organization, the Federal Mexican Government, the State Government, etc. - all of the walls in old Heritage Site San Miguel are painted every year by the government to keep up appearances.... If someone gets sick from eating in a restaurant in San Miguel - the government will be all over that establishment like a wet blanket - the standards in San Miguel are kept much higher than they are in the average, normal Mexican city - they are kept at an acceptable International Standards level..... And there are establishments in San Miguel that are here to serve the rich, Mexican elite that come to San Miguel as a refuge and retreat - restaurants, luxury hotels, art galleries, etc.
I really like my Spanish Teacher, Warren Hardy.
He has a good sense of humour, and
he is a deep thinker, and
he is a very open and up front type of guy,
in addition to being a very nice person...
He is an American, who has become a Mexican Citizen - which takes a long time and
is a difficult process...And he has become a Mexican Patriot......
His Spanish Language classes are all in the mornings when people are still sharp and wide awake.
All of his Spanish Language classes are spaced one day apart (one day on and one day off)because he says that the brain needs time to process all of the new information...Of course the day off is used to do the Spanish Language homework (tarea) that he gives to us to do...And the fact that we are usually brain dead for awhile after our Spanish Language classes....
Definitely one of Warren Hardy's strong points is he is really great at motivating us
and keeping us motivated - we get several motivational talks every day that we have a class.....
He came to San Miguel 23 years ago (1990) with his girl friend, Tuli, married her that year and started his Spanish School in San Miguel that year and bought a 2 or 3 acre piece of property in San Miguel that year for $3 a square meter - that land is now worth $500 a square meter....
and his house is on it...
His wife Tuli, is his assistant at his Spanish School, and she is really nice
and really good looking and a hippie type - pony tail, drives a pink Volkswagen,
and is always full of energy and enthusiasm...she looks, acts and seems to be much younger
than she must really be...I discussed her pink Volkswagen with her
- which she wanted me to know was "Hot Pink" - not just pink...
I told her that I thought that "Hot Pink" was a very much underated colour.
She agreed with me completely and absolutely and totally.......
They are both very nice people - and they throw a party at their place for their Spanish Language students during every course....
Tuli bakes brownies and other things for us for our coffee breaks - and they are really good...
I am still wondering about how well behaved Mexican children are...
I have already mentioned that the Mexicans do not like to say no
- instead, they say that they want to think about it some more...
They do not like to say that they do not like something
- instead they say that they do not like it a lot, or
they say that they like it a little bit...
They do not tell their children that they cannot do something,
- instead they tell them that they can do it tomorrow - manana
And manana never comes.......
But there is something else in the Spanish language that may be a sutile factor,...
The parent address their children as Tu - the informal you.
The children address their parents as Usted - the formal you..
But even more important is the fact that all Spanish verbs have a Tu form
and a Usted form. So every verb that the child uses with their parents
is in the Usted, formal, form
and ever verb that the parents use with their children
is in the Tu, informal, form...
Could this be a factor in establishing a certain type of relationship
between the parents and their children???????
I am sure that there are many factors involved, not just one or two or three factors....
Another factor is that Mexicans are very big on family and family relationships..
You cannot trust anyone, but family......
And the "Day of the Dead", on October 31, may be the biggest celebration in the year for Mexicans - or at least one of the biggest celebrations of the year....To Anglophones like me, the "Day of the Dead" has a sinister and evil sound to it. But to Mexicans, it is a day to remember and honour their dead parents, and grandparents, etc.....To an Anglophone like me - the "Day of the Dead" sounds a little bit like the night of the Walking Dead (Zombies) or the Living Dead (Zombies again) and I do not like Zombies....I am afraid of them.....
Holidays in Mexico include Mother's Day, Father's Day, Grandparent's Day, Family Day and Children's Day and Valentine's Day is a day for Amours and Amistads - love and friendship.. .
I have many theories and explainations to explain the world around me
and what is happening in the world around me,
and the things that people do in it , and the events that happen in it
and that are happening in it...
To me, women seem to be able to learn another language (Spanish)
better and faster than men...
It has been scientitifically proven that women perceive physical reality in slightly different and subtly different ways than men.through the five senses..Women hear higher frequencies than men and in general have better hearing than men, their sense of touch is more sensitive than men's and they are more sensitive to their physical envirnoment than men (that is why they complain about the cold and the heat more than the men do)... And women learn to talk at an earlier age than men do, and in general have better verbal abilities....And of course, as everyone knows,
women talk away more than men, so they get a lot more practice talking than men do...
That is my explanation of why women seem to be able to learn another lanuguage better and faster than men do or can..... take it or leave it or lump it....,
To Be Happy
You Need Three Things:
1. Something To Do
2. Something (Someone) To Love
3. Something To Look Forward To
