Mis Estimados Compadres,
Amigos, Amigas, Compaņeros y Compaņeras:

Old age is a time of blossoming
- it is the whole point of life and of being human
- and those of us that make it are the lucky ones....

Was at a talk the other day by David Winfield, retired former Canadian Ambassador to Mexico,
who lives in San Miguel. Tony Eaton, another retired former Canadian Ambassador to Mexico,
also lives in San Miguel. So does Troller Cranston, a Canadian Olympic Medal winner in figure skating and a renowned painter and artist....
Not all of Mexico is like San Miguel. San Miguel is small town Mexico
and it is not like big city Mexico (Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Queretaro, Leon. Vera Cruz, etc.) and it is not like the seaside, tourist resort cities.Mexico..... San Miguel is special - it is magic..
San Miguel is becoming a vacation spot for the rich, elite big city Mexicans from Mexico City who want to get away from big city Mexico for awhile....
The retired, former Canadian Ambassador to Mexico's talk was very interesting... Lots of little personal tidbits - Margaret Trudeau singing for the President of Mexico, etc. - Private talks between Brian Maloney, Prime Minister of Canada and Senor Salinas, President of Mexico with no other government officials present - government bureaucrats hate that because there is no telling
what they may talk about...

The President of the Mexican teacher's union is in jail and has been denied bail...Good thing,
with her private jet and luxury properties in different places in the world including Switzerland and California. She, it is a women, represented 1.5 million teachers in Mexico and the Teacher's Union has more than 22,000 employees......Her supporters say that there are many very corrupt officials in Mexico (which is very true) and they even name many of them - and why are they not in jail,
instead of her..... Than they answer their own question - the other corrupt officials are supporting the government, that is why they are not in jail (very true), and she opposed the Mexican Government program to reform the Mexican Educational system, which is Federal, and that is why she is in jail (very true)....In Mexico, you have to play ball with the Powers that be or suffer the consequences... It is described by some people as a corrupt system that works...
Contrasted with the USA that has a legally corrupt system that is not working.....

It is reminiscent of the Soviet Communist system where they said that behind every man there is a crime. What they mean is that you could not possibly have lived in the Soviet Union under the Communist system with out committing crimes. These crimes then could always be used as a threat of being prosecuted if the individuals were not behaving in a manner that was acceptable to the government...

The system of corruption Mexico let's the Mexican government get, keep and have
the support of a large segment of the Mexican power structure and system....
The present new government of Mexico is determined to modernized Mexico,
and sees that the modernization of its educational system is essential
to this process of Modernizing Mexico...
.. .
A former Canadian Ambassador to Mexico once described Mexico
as the most corrupt country in the world. He was immediately kicked out of Mexico by
the Mexican Government and his career in the Canadian Foreign Affairs Department
came to a very abrupt end...... I guess he did not have a very good understanding
on how the system worked...

Staring Level 2 Spanish tomorrow.
This is the wall in learning Spanish, that many people never get beyond or over...
There is 9 tenses in the Spanish language.
There is
1st person singular
2nd person singular
3rd person singular
1st person plural
3nd person plural

The 9 tenses times the 5 types of persons = 45 possible ending for each and every verb,
plus there are many irregular verbs in Spanish where the spelling of the verb changes completely.
Also, the Spanish say everything backwards - so I am going to have to learn to say
and even think backwards if I want to get over this learning to speak Spanish wall...

We say - I gave it to him
Spanish - To him it I gave

Did Mary speak??
Spoke Mary??

Word order is different in Spanish than in English..

I definitely prefer the English way of doing things...

Our Spanish language teacher says that it is just a game so have fun....

If you never hear from me again - you do not have to wonder why...

Viva La Mexico

Hasta La Viva
