San Miguel/Monterrey/Laredo/San Antonio/Austin/Waco/Dallas/Texarkana/Little Rock/Memphis/Nashville/Knoxville/Cincinnati/Cleveland/Akron, Ohio-----

When I was musing about hiding my money in different places
in the previous travelogue/blog - remember,
that I had 3 different piles of money - peso's, USA$$$'s & Cdn.$$$'s...
I also live in fear that I am going to forget my money
and leave it in some hidey hole somewhere,
and a thousand miles later remember
- oh my God!!!!! I left my money in a hidey hole a thousand miles back there...
And I have stopped several times just to look through my car, the JEEP, to find
my money just to be sure that I did not leave it back there in a hidey hole...

My mind is starting to go numb from the driving 10 to 12 hours a day
and the isolation..... I would not make a very good long distance truck driver..

I am very isolated/alienated, being in my car all day with no contact with anyone,
in effect living in my little isolated bubble - my car - my JEEP... that is my world right now.....

Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of my wrecked car.
I think that people would have been impressed
- impressed that I was still alive
after they saw what my wrecked car looked like after the accident...
A picture of me standing beside the wrecked car would have looked really neat

Reflecting on and analyzing my accident – the rolling and totaling of my car.

It happened about 9:00pm at night – it was completely dark out – about a 100 miles past Laredo…

I had spent the previous 5 hours getting through the 4 border crossings:

  -  The Mexican army check point 30 miles before the border

  -  Mexican customs and immigration

  -  American customs and immigration

  - The American check point 30 miles past Laredo

I had than stopped and gassed up and bought some groceries to eat in the car.

Cherries, grapes, blue berries, black berries…..

Before the 5 hour, 4 border crossing I had spent 4 hours driving from Monterrey to Laredo. The 4 hour drive from Monterrey to Laredo is a dessert and there is no where to stop for a break or rest with the exception of one truck stop station at about the half way point. I think that I may have passed through some Federale Police stops/check points. I do not remember because after a while everything becomes a big blur… But I do remember thinking that they do keep the highway through the Mexican War Zone fairly safe and secure… There were all of those crosses
along side the highway for people that did not make it and tractor trailers in the ditches alongside the highway but no dead or dismembered bodies laying about….

Laredo is in the middle of nowhere in the desert, a 4 hour drive from Monterrey
and another 2  or 3 hour drive to San Antonio
not counting or including the 5 hours to cross the 4 border crossings…

It was 9:00pm and totally dark out and there were no cars on the road.
It was a divided 4 lane highway...

And I  was paying more attention to eating my cherries than I was to my driving....

It was bad and good that there were no other cars on the road..
Bad - because if there had been other cars on the road
I would have been paying more attention to my driving
- I pay more attention to my driving when there are other cars around
Good - because once I started spinning out of control,
if there had been other cars on the road it would have meant instant death..

I do not know how fast I was driving, however:
- I do not drive at 160K at night, and
- I was now in the USA/Texas, where the speed limits might be enforced,...
- I would not drive at 100K or less, because it is against my religion, and
since I was eating my cherries I would have probably slowed down another 20K,
So my guess is that I was driving at 120K....

I may have fallen asleep for a few micro-seconds..
The car tires were making a loud noise,
because I was going off of the road, either woke me up or got my attention..

I was not drifting off of the road - I was going off of the road....
towards the ditch that separated the 2 lanes from the other 2 lanes of traffic.

I do not know what happen exactly after that
  - I overreacted and overcompensated,
  - I skidded to the other side of the road,
  - I overreacted and overcompensated again, and
  - skidded to the other side of the road, and
  - I overreacted and overcompensated again, and
  - skidded to the other side of the road, and
  - I overreacted and overcompensated again, and
  - skidded to the other side of the road, and
into the ditch separating the 4 lane highway...

While I was trying to get control of my car,
I was also slamming on my brakes to reduce my speed.
(I think - I am not sure about that - I think that at that point I want to come to a complete stop)..

I was not operating on a logical, rational basis - I was reacting to a situation...

When I hit the ditch, my car twisted sideways and started rolling along the ditch sideways.
It rolled over 3 or 4 times and came to a standstill - right side up and the engine was still running,
and the car lights were still on and the car's windshield was a real mess...

It is an interesting experience - the whole event probably did not take more than a few seconds
at the very most - but my brain went into super drive fast, so it was like I had 20 or 30 seconds
to think about things and things seemed to be happening in slow motion...
What was I thinking - "holy fucking shit - I think that this might be the end of it all - I sure as hell
do not want to roll into the oncoming traffic on the other side of the highway
- that would be the end of it all for me for sure.. but I really do not have much control
over my car right now..."

I have experienced the super drive fast thinking, when everything appears to be happening
in slow motion, in the past, in my youth several times, - when playing sports, hockey,

I think that if someone jumped or fell off of a high building
or out of an airplane, they would experience the same super drive fast thinking
and be able to think about things briefly... not that they would be able to do anything about it...

I turned the car engine off, left my car lites on and turned on my emergency car lites.

Got out of my car and started to cogitate...

My car was not going anywhere.

My two front wheels were twisted away out of shape and my two front tires were a real mess,
the whole front end of the car was all messed up and the roof was caved and crushed in...

I cogitated some more.... and ate some more cherries and grapes.....

Someone must have called the police, because the police arrived about 10 minutes later,
while I was still cogitating about the reality of existence and what was I going to do
and what was my next move - 9:00pm at night (completely dark) and in the middle of no where......
However, I did have my cherries and grapes, which I did start to eat again....

The police questioned me very closely for about an hour,
while we were waiting for a tow truck that they had called for to arrive
and while I was eating my cherries and grapes...

The tow tuck driver hooked my car up and tow my car and me to the next town, about 25 miles away - Dilley, Texas - population 3,000 - 75% Hispanic it was 11:00pm at nite...
Story to be continued - maybe???

I have to hit the road now - I have things to do, places to go
and people to see if I want to make it back to Ottawa, Canada and Lise again...

Still Bruised and Dazed
But Still Alive
