The target's propped, the chairs are lined up in a row. The competition's keen, sharp-eyed teens are gathered here and play to win.

I want to do that too, I say. I used to shoot when I was a kid (my brother had a cowboy hat and a capgun holster set, Indian feathers for his head with bow and arrows in a sling-like holder, he'd be the cowboy I'd be the Indian in back-yard battles while the dog ran back and forth not knowing who to cheer).

They tolerate me, let me go next, I'm handed bow and arrow, there's the line. I aim, my gosh the target's not that far away, release, I come up short. The second time, too far to the left. And then I overshoot. So anyway, they cheer. Pretty sure their lead is not endangered yet.

And so we spend the afternoon.
