Go with me? The kids are settled into school now, with homework a part of the daily routine. But assignments shouldn't get in the way of Reading for Fun. Here's my suggestion for nudging the little noodles towards the classics. We're going to a play at the Chattanooga Youth Theater.

This weekend's play is Washington Irving's "Legend of Sleepy Hollow," and it has all the right elements to capture and enrapture. It's pre-Halloween scary, it has its funny moments, and no doubt it will make the kids want to read the tale again when they get back home.

There's something about sitting in a darkened room while literary characters prance and parade all around you that sparks the need to know more. Or at least to ponder what really happened. Was nerdy Ichabod Crane whisked into the spirit world on that fateful evening? Or was bully Brom Bones merely up to more mischief? Was coquettish Katrina worth the quest?

This play puts us smack dab in the middle of Sleepy Hollow, with action taking place on platforms and ramps and aisleways between us, behind us, and right in front of our eyes. Six storytellers keep things moving, as hilarity is replaced by mystery. Watch out for Major Andre, and the Lady in White. Watch out for the Headless Horseman!

When the house lights go up, take your crew to the bookstore for an after-theater rehash and a stack of good stories. Look for more Washington Irving. Get a travel book about New York's Hudson River Valley so you can see the hills and hollows his characters wandered. All great stuff for autumn evenings and read-out-loud time while you share a bowl of caramel corn. See you there.
