Go with me? It's the best competition of the weekend, and it's on the water, matey, just where the river runs through town. We're going to the Chattanooga Head Race, the rowing event of the season.

They're coming to Our Town from every direction - 28 teams with 900 rowers. Categories are college, high school, and clubs. They'll be rowing the eights, fours, doubles and single sculls for three miles from starting point to Ross's Landing. But unlike the sprint races in springtime, they start out single file and race against the clock. How do you know who wins? Judges post the results after all the stats are tabulated. Watch for the cheering!

The Very Best Spot for viewing the action is from the Walnut Street Bridge, of course. That way you'll be able to see the rowers for most of their journey downriver. A quick switch to the other side of the bridge allows a birds-eye assessment of the finish line.

Bring your binoculars and watch for UTC's blue and gold shirts; other college competitors are Alabama, Armstrong, Berry, Brenau, Georgia Tech, Murray State, UTK, and Vanderbilt. Green and white are the colors for Chattanooga's junior team; other juniors are Baylor, McCallie, GPS, Oak Ridge, and several Atlanta teams.

Sponsor of the Head Race is Lookout Rowing Club, which will be competing against clubs from Atlanta, Birmingham, Clinton, Knoxville Lake Lanier, Louisville, Oak Ridge, and Huntsville.

Does all this fun and sport make you want to take up rowing yourself? Go for it! Rowing is a sport manageable by persons of any age or gender; a love of the water, fresh air, and exercise is key. Lookout Rowing Club has three levels of rowing you can choose: competition, recreational, and fitness/weight control. Sounds like a plan. See you there.
