But granddaughter or no, even the most curmudgeonly among us can't resist the appeal of a doll, though it might be for its collectibility value, or its uniqueness as an art form.
Xavier Roberts went for uniqueness, back in 1978 when he carefully hand-stitched the first Little People that now command as much as $11,000 each. You know them as Cabbage Patch Kids today, and they are "born" daily at BabyLand General in the north Georgia mountains.
A visit begins in the Father's Waiting Room and follows the Kids as they study in the schoolroom or play by the wishing pond. When the lights on the Magic Crystal Tree begin to blink, hurry! Gather round as one of the cabbages in the patch unfolds to reveal the newest Kid.
If a huggy doll is on your list, choose one of the Mattel mass-produced Kids with price tags as low as $35. The soft-sculpture collector items, hand-signed by artist Roberts, begin at $185. This year's special 20th Anniversary edition offers only 300 each of Spring Sass, Summer Mischief, Autumn Scholar, and Winter Snuggles for adoption; hand numbered at $395.
"So homely, they're adorable," is how the award-winning Cabbage Patch Kids have been described, and over 90 million have brightened someone's home in the last 20 years. Are you ready to take the Oath of Adoption and become an adoring parent yourself? See you there.
