Go with me? This is dedicated to those of you who have never walked the Walnut Street Bridge. Maybe you're new in town, or maybe you just don't walk much. But when I finish splaining, you'll write me a thank you!

First of all, it's a good place to unkink winter muscles and catch up to spring. Our glorious Bradford pears have bloomed and leafed; the redbuds are flashing fuscia under new-green oaks; and errant dandelions have already fuzzed. We need to stretch out too.

The Walnut is that chunk of RiverWalk that puts us high above the spring-muddy waters of the Tennessee. And it claims to be the longest pedestrian walkway over water in the world.

You might see your best friend walking the Walnut. You might see Miss America - she'll be walking the Walnut on Sunday with the Third Annual Strides of March Benefit Walk. Did you know people come from all over the world to walk it? They come to learn about the renovation of this 1890's structure, or how it fits our plan for a more-livable city. They come for parties, and fund-raisers. But most come for the fresh air and the view.

It's a half-mile walk across and everything we brag about is visible from here - mountains and aquarium peaks; the historic downtown skyline; our funtime paddlewheelers and workhorse barges. All framed, of course, by the brilliant blue crossbeams of the bridge.

Stay late for a killer sunset, and evening's twinkling lights. But before it gets dark, read the hundreds of names on the brass plaques attached to the yellow-pine boards under your feet. Then silently thank those people for helping to preserve this treasure. See you there.
