Mom and Ma Nature
Trip Start Mar 07, 1997

We're going to North Chickamauga Creek. North Chick may be the prettiest little creek in the world. It begins near the crest of Walden Ridge, plunging through a spectacular gorge before playing hide-and-seek through caves on the valley floor.
When it reappears, it decorates the Hixson community, winding through sprawling farms, new subdivisions, and thanks to good planning, along Greenway paths. It has traveled 32 miles by the time it turns into the Tennessee just below the dam. Along the way its tree-shaded waters invite fishing, canoeing, swimming and a glimpse of Mother Nature at her best.
Public access is easiest at the Greenway entrance, where there is a picnic pavilion and walking path. It's near the dam and just off Lake Resort Drive. The pavilion is a great spot for an out-of-doors breakfast, lunch or supper.
There's a canoe put-in here, if you want to paddle the placid dark-green waters. Watch for the great blue herons -- you may spot Mama teaching a young one how to fish.
Take the lower trail for a creekside walk through old-growth forest and trailing honeysuckle. It's not too far to some benches, where you can stop and reminisce.
Add the upper trail if you want a more aerobic 2.5 mile walk on the hill.
How do we happen to have such a tranquil spot in the fastest-growing area of the city? Much credit goes to the Friends of North Chickamauga Creek Greenway.
"We're a citizen group with the mission of protecting the creek and making it accessible to the public," says Kincaid Mills, president. "We invite everyone to join us in looking after this wonderful asset."
Yes, some things are to be cherished. Like moms, and the beautiful North Chick. See you there.
