Andrews, North Carolina, population 2,551.

Nantahala means Land of the Noonday Sun; the Nantahala Gorge is so deep and narrow that the sun reaches the bottom only at noonday. Beginning here are scenic drives through the Southern Appalachians Nantahala Forest and opportunities for hiking, swimming, fishing for bass and trout, and hunting for deer, wild boar, turkey, and ruffed grouse.

Several of the Great Smoky Mountains Railway Excursions depart from here; Red Marble Gap goes through the Nantahala Gorge, Three-in-One combines the Tuckasegee, Nantahala and Red Marble Gap with a one-hour layover at the gorge; a box lunch is included.

Hawkesdene House is a B&B on 20 acres adjoining the Nantahala National Forest; decks, fireplaces.
